How does Priest Holmes’ surprising return affect Larry Johnson’s holdout?
The unexpected return of Holmes after a 21-month layoff comes at a great time for the Chiefs. Though no one knows how much Holmes has left after his sabbatical, his return potentially gives the Chiefs some leverage in their contract discussions with Johnson. The three-time Pro Bowler had one of the most productive three-year runs (2001-03) in NFL history and was the reason why Johnson barely saw the field during his first two seasons. The likelihood of Holmes returning to that level is doubtful, given his age (33) and nature of his injuries; but coming back as a productive complementary player is not out of the question. The Chiefs, in fact, are likely willing to gamble that Holmes has the skills and fortitude to flourish in the K.C. backfield (along with Michael Bennett) in Johnson’s absence.
